Community Good (Unrestricted) Funds

About Community Good (Unrestricted) Funds

A Community Good (Unrestricted) Fund is an endowed fund carrying no restrictions on how the income may be used in awarding monetary grants to nonprofit organizations.

These unrestricted dollars form the basis of the Community Foundation’s strategic grantmaking programs, to strengthen local nonprofits and support community leadership initiatives. The beauty and strength of these funds is the flexibility they provide to meet changing needs throughout the community.

How It Works

What is the purpose of a Community Good (Unrestricted) Fund?

To make the most effective grants in our communities that leverage your gift to address immediate local needs and advance emerging opportunities.

How does a Community Good (Unrestricted) Fund work?

Through your initial gift, we will establish an unrestricted fund in your name or a name you choose or you may add your gift to your county affiliate's Friends Fund.

Who is the ideal donor for a Community Good (Unrestricted) Fund?

You are. This fund type is great for those who want their fund to be flexible enough to meet changing needs and do not feel the need to be actively involved in ongoing grantmaking. Community Good Funds are ideal for individuals and families who want to leave a legacy gift supporting their community or for memorializing an individual or family.

What grants can be made from Community Good (Unrestricted) Fund?

Grants from Community Good Funds must be charitable and they cannot directly benefit the donor or anyone on the grantmaking committee.

Who is responsible for the grantmaking?

Our Community Good Grants committee, along with the local County Advisory Board, is responsible for the grantmaking decisions.

Must grantmaking be competitive?

Not necessarily. Grants from our unrestricted funds are awarded annually through our competitive Community Good Grants Program; however, the County Advisory Board may also choose to award proactive Community Good grants at any time.
